Ignite! Learning's digital content solution helps make instruction stick!

Ignite! Learning's instructional design involves presenting a necessary Math, Science, or Social Studies concept within its linear, foundational context in multiple modalities, creating a varied barrage of representation to reach a whole classroom community of learners. Rather than just a textbook description of a concept, we will repeat an idea in multiple engaging ways to appeal to the diverse learning styles and multiple intelligences in a classroom, through videos, interactive games, animations, and music video.

While the content is purposefully engaging, it is by no means a mere edutainment product, as there is a high-level of rigor and frequent and varied assessment woven throughout all intersections of content in the curriculum. Each media piece has multiple formative assessment questions tied directly into teachable moments in that media, as well as formal, summative assessment; project-based authentic assessments; and informal assessment in our thorough and integral print components.

Ignite! Learning has designed its curriculum to achieve the following principles:
  • Accommodate diverse learning styles
  • Challenge students to learn by doing
  • Help students learn in context by unifying big-picture ideas
  • Help students recognize relevance of material to their daily lives
  • Challenge students to demonstrate learning in a variety of ways

The comprehensive Ignite! Learning curriculum is made up of full standards-aligned Math, Science, and Social Studies courses, featuring 180 days of instruction. With over 3,000 media pieces and print lessons as well as enrichment activities, and frequent and varied assessment, our curriculum provides relevant instruction for your entire scope and sequence!

Curriculum Components

  1. Lesson Plans: Ignite! Learning curriculum includes lesson plans to use when planning instruction.
  2. Media: The Ignite! Learning media library consists of movies, songs, animations, charts, graphs, and interactive pieces to engage students and promote a deeper understanding of key concepts.
  3. Student Activities: Each unit contains a unit challenge and student activities to develop critical thinking through discussion and written activities.
  4. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Skills Activities: Ignite! Learning curriculum contains "whole-class" activities that help create a truly interactive classroom. Perfect for reinforcing difficult-to-learn concepts and important topics while fostering critical thinking.
  5. Assessments: Test students' understanding of material through individual or whole-class assessments.

Ignite! Learning curriculum is designed to emphasize connections among concepts, making them "stickier" — easier to learn and remember. This is because we recognize that students learn by building conceptual bridges between new information and what they already understand. The Ignite! Math, Science, and Social Studies media libraries consist of movies, songs, animations, charts and graphs, and interactive pieces to engage students and promote a deeper understanding of key concepts. Ignite! Learning media goes far beyond "edutainment" to use instructionally sound practices to boost stickiness. From big-picture questions to intrinsic humor to mnemonic devices, our media engages students in a way that helps them really engage with and understand core curriculum concepts.

Ignite! Math features an innovative combination of engaging media and print activities to stimulate student comprehension and classroom interaction.

The use of print and media together is purposeful — it gives students opportunities to be both engaged and active participants in the process of learning mathematics.

Because we learn by building conceptual bridges between new information and what we already understand, Ignite! Math emphasizes connections among concepts, making them "stickier" — easier to learn and remember. Lessons don't appear as "one-off" media pieces, but as part of a whole course broken into units and topics.

Ignite! Math Media

The media library consists of movies, songs, live action, animations, charts, and graphs, and interactive pieces to engage students and promote a deeper understanding of key concepts. By modeling thinking skills such as compare-and-contrast, cause-and-effect, and problem-solution, students make stronger connections among concepts, improving both learning and retention.

Daily and Reteach Lessons: Activities allow students the necessary pencil-to-paper practice in understanding mathematics.

Future Leaders in Problem Solving (F.L.I.P.S.): Individual, small-group, or whole-class activities which present challenging math problems that require a variety of mathematical and logical skills to solve.

Home Connection: Homework lessons that apply the day's math lessons to real-world scenarios students will encounter in their homes and neighborhoods.

Teachers receive a companion Comprehensive Teacher's Guide which includes lesson plans, media reflection questions, engaged learning options, language of instruction, ELL tips, and literature connections.

The principal at Stanton Elementary School in El Paso, Texas found:
"Ignite! provides visual samples and listening samples plus a glossary. Ignite! gives the tools for the bilingual students to hear the terms and put it in effect. They see them over and over again. When Ignite! provides the terminology and then reemphasizes it with video, the students are able to capture the vocabulary. Regular students are able to picture what is going on with the visual animation. They see it and fully comprehend it -- like with the water cycle."

  • ELL students make connections between spoken and written words through the music and key words displayed on the screen.
  • The U.S. History to 1865 lessons in Spanish allow for a media piece to be played in English and then played again in Spanish. This allows for further connections to be made for the Spanish speaking ELL students. Additionally, it provides enrichment for the English speaking students as they were introduced to Spanish.

Ignite! Learning believes all kids can learn.

In order to meet the different learning modalities in a classroom, Ignite! Learning's media sequentially presents similar ideas in multiple ways allowing for easy differentiation in a classroom.

Because we learn by building conceptual bridges between new information and what we already understand, Ignite! Special Education emphasizes connections among concepts, making them "stickier" — easier to learn and remember. Lessons don't appear as "one-off" media pieces, but as part of a whole course broken into units and topics.

Chunking and Repetition

Concise bits of information are chunked in packets and repeated a few times across a topic of content. This repetition of content through varied and highly engaging representation allows students to find resonance with an idea that may otherwise slip passed them. This chunking limits the number of concepts presented at one time.

Textual Reinforcement

Within the media, key terms are highlighted as onscreen text, to draw students' attention to important ideas which are then found in the Glossary and the Index for more repetition and context. With media that includes audio, these terms are read aloud by voice actors, so that students can really focus as they read and listen to an idea at the same time.

Clear Directions

Instructions for student activity in the media will describe the students task, have the directions appear as on-screen text in a numerical list, and will provide the option to replay the audio instructions. By doing so, Ignite! Learning provides written and verbal directions with visuals.

Graphic Organizers

Graphic organizers are great tools for students requiring visuals to organize their thinking. Ignite! Learning provides many types graphic organizers in its print and media, including T-charts, Venn diagrams, tables, and more.

Glossaries and Summaries

To assist students when they encounter unfamiliar terms, each course has its own unique glossary that is as easy to access as a click of a button. To further help students, the print material for each course has a Unit summary, while the media for Science and Social Studies include Unit Introductions, explaining what is to be expected from the Unit. Math has Warm-Up media at the Topic level, which allows students to prepare for the new content they are about to encounter.
